13.Jul.2001 ANNOUNCE on Friday the 13th: CoolPlayer going Open Source. Yes my dear friends I saw the light, I finally have decided to go Open Source on CoolPlayer. CoolPlayer's sourcecode will soon be released under the GPL. I came to this decision because I alone cannot keep up with all the wishes and suggestions users have, although it would be great to have them. In the battle for the most popular player there are still a few left and I know that to keep up with CoolPlayer it will need the force of the many. I hope it will benefit from ideas and participation of programmers around the world. Here are some considerations: - Implementation of other decoding engines and compression algorithms - Improving speed, size and quality of code - Extending skin possibilities - Adding new features - Multilingual support - Bugfixing All overruling goal: CoolPlayer must be a lean mean playing machine! To developers: Do you like spaghetti? Wat you will see is the result of a codebase built from scratch that has been bugfixed and improved for over two years. Don't expect it to be pretty. There is a lot of cleanup that can be done. Everyone who sees the light to clean (parts) of the code is very welcome to do so! If you are interested to help develop CoolPlayer please let me know! I will need to have the code ready for distribution in a few days. I'm still looking for a good CVS-like system that can keep the code controllable and keeps track of bugs/improvements and suggestions. Any suggestions? It may not be an unlucky day for some... Have a nice day! -Niek nieka@daansystems.com http://www.daansystems.com
